³¼SCENE HANDOVER¼³
²
I am writing this to give my views on
the "scene" and what is happening to it
at the moment. If you are thinking of
selling your Amiga cos the scene is
dead, DON`T! I will try and convince
you not to...
¹
What is the "scene" anyway? I view it
as having friends who share your inte-
rest on the Amiga and who contribute to
this growing group. This IS the scene,
sharing your work with others. You can
be a lamer but still ON the scene(well,
they can dream at any rate!).
The scene has been around for about 10
years now, ever since the good old 64.
In fact, most Elite guys today have
been around along time now. Names like
TRSI, QUARTEX, AMIGA INDUSTRIES, and
many others feature back a long time
ago. Their members often having been
in older groups like HQC, etc.
But how much longer can they carry on?
Most, I guess, will be 19 to mid twen-
ties now, and these elite and non-elite
guys have contributed much to our en-
joyment on the scene. Others are much
older. But there is more to life than
the scene, they will want to get bigger
and better employment, start a family,
enjoy golf, etc. So who does that
leave to "run" the scene? The big guns
are starting to disappear now, some oc-
casionally return, but they are going
and it is sad.
It is upto us, the younger lot, to keep
the "scene" going, and to keep the
friendship there is. There need to be
more coders as the hobbyist age of
technics fanatics has passed, with
everything assembled for us to buy.
Releases should be of quality, and not
quantity, and if we do this, the slow
but gradual handover over the next 2 or
3 years will not be so noticeable.
This is probably the best scene there
is for any computer. We really have to
push ourselves so we can keep it going
and it is going to take a lot of ef-
fort, but we CAN do it. Some feel that
when the big names have gone, the Amiga
will spiral into a decline. NOT SO!
There is a lot of talent around, espe-
cially in musicians and grafix. Be
cause we all have an Amiga, I guess we
will continue to support it for many
years to come. New coders to rival
Azatoth and others will surface, so the
scene needn`t be afraid of the Amiga
dying due to lots of healthy competi-
tion.
Look at the 64. It is still flouri-
shing years after it`s "demise". The
same will happen to the Amiga, if and
when all production is ceased. The
scene has never been better, so let`s
keep it that way - no wars, and no
slagging is the way to go forward.
Even with the *new* range of Amigas,
AA chips, and so on, the Amiga will not
die. I have started to code, and I en-
joy it, but do I have all the necessary
books etc.? - NO! Software is constant
ly updated for the user, AsmOne being a
superb example of this. Most impor-
tantly however, is that despite the
HUGE criticism on Commodore, they have
managed to make things very compatible.
Look at the St/Ste for a real example
of mis-management! I`m using a second
hand ROM kernal manual (tssh!) which is
for the 1.1 & 1.2 ROMS!!! (Stupid C,
makes things harder in the manual!).
But, the references at the back, etc,
STILL WORK - 7 YEARS ON. ( Can anyone
supply me with the 2.04 versions of the
Hardware Ref, Libs + Autodocs, and RKM
on disk??? If so pleez send them to me
and I`ll send you a load of disks. My
addy`s in the ads!)
The simple message is, the scene has
never been better than now and there
will always be people like you and me
enjoying it.
The Amiga is a survivor - as long as
Amiga freaks continue to support it.
³ Amiga NEEDS the scene!
We NEED the Amiga!
